It was a beautiful sunny day, it was warm but not too warm and I just knew it was going to be a perfect day for a wedding. I woke up and slowly started getting dressed in anticipation of what was ahead. Today was the day I was going to marry my highschool sweetheart!
We met at church at the tender age of 12 and we didn’t really date, we held hands a little bit but that was about all and then I went to Greece for the summer and we went our seperate ways. Years later, in 1988 we met up again, right after my father’s death when I had just turned 17. We have been together ever since, and we decided to finally get married on September 18 1999.
That day was totally perfect, the weather, the way I was feeling, not nervous, just happy, so incredibly happy. Family and friends came over and so the celebration began. Once the hair and make up was done and i put my dress on, we were ready to go. We choose a pretty little church near where we lived and had a greek evangelical pastor aid the united minister with the ceremony. As I walked down the aisle and saw my handsome husband standing there looking at me so lovingly, my heart skipped a beat and I lost my breath, as I took in all the family and friends surrounding us, loving us supporting us and celebrating this day with us. The day when God joined us together as husband and wife.
I must say that the ceremony was so much fun but the reception was even better. After we went to sunnyside to take our pictures, which took a wee bit longer than anticipated and yet I wish we took more, lol. We ended up having to go to wallmart to pick up our first wedding song which happened to be “don’t want to miss a thing” by aerosmith. My new husband and my brother went into wallmart as I and my matron of honour were in the caddy waiting for them. We did get noticed, how could we not, girl in big white dress and tiara and just hanging out in front of wallmart in a big white caddy, all of them were sweet enough to congratulate us but do you think they let them bud in the line to let us get out of there quicker, no. To this day I say I should have gone in there instead, I would have been faster that’s for sure, lol. As it was, we got to the reception late, didn’t even get to do a receiving line but we were introduced to our guests as the newly wedded couple and so the party began.
Our reception was held at the beautiful Ellas Banquet Hall, http://www.ellas.com/where else should a greek wedding be held in the 90′s,lol. They took such good care of us and the food and service was excellent. We had greek appetizers consisting of spanokopita, dolmades (greek leaves stuffed with rice), bifteki, olives and tzatziki/hummus/tarama dips with bread and pita to begin with. Greek salad follwed that and then the main entree which was 14 oz prime rib, the most tender succulent slab of beef ever, and my personal fave to this day. Accompanied by parisienne potatoes and a medley of veggies, to finish it off we had baked alaska and the waiters had sparklers in each slice of cake and danced around before serving us, it was quite a show. We also had a huge sweet table, but I was so full that I didn’t even eat anything else, not even our wedding cake which was so yummy. We should have packed some stuff with us to take home, or at least to our hotel room for the night before leaving for our honeymoon the following day.
The night came to an end close to 2am as everyone surrounded us for our last dance and our close friends held hands and danced around us as Chris and I danced our final dance for the evening. I loved the hugs and love we felt that night, that whole day. We had such huge smiles on our faces as we drove to the royal york hotel for our first night as man and wife. We had the prince andrew suite, 2nd best suite in the hotel, and it was gorgeous. They were nice enough to give us a bowl of fruit but boy was I craving some desserts or cakes that were on that sweet table.
A few friends came to the hotel with us and help us enjoy the large corner suite with 2 bedrooms, they stayed a bit too late but finally left and we got to sleep for well a couple of hours, lol.
Both our mothers came the next morning and for some reason the hotel would not let them come up, so we came down and went to have breakfast and then they took us to the airport where we boarded our flight to beautiful St. Martin.
I still feel the same way I did 10 years ago, and as we celebrated our 10th at the same place we had our reception, I realized I am so looking forward to the next 10 and 20 and 30 or however many years God gives us.
To my love, I fell in love with you 20 years ago, married you 10 years ago and will love you forever, Happy 10th Anniversary baby!
